How to Design Custom Cookie Cutters

A custom cookie cutter starts with the shape you want to make: a party theme, an original illustration or a size that is hard to find. Cutter Bench helps you design the tool and export a model. Printing and checking the finished tool's suitability for food are separate steps.

1. Start with a readable silhouette

Use a built-in shape or import your own SVG. A bold outline is easier to inspect than a detailed illustration. Convert text to paths before importing. If you are tracing an image, use strong contrast and review the result; a photograph or textured background can introduce unwanted shapes.

Begin with the outside shape. Add decorative impressions only after you are happy with the silhouette. A line in your artwork could mean a cut-out or a stamped detail, so check its intended role in the studio.

2. Set the cut size

Enter the width and height in millimetres. For a cutter, these describe the inside cutting edge rather than the outer grip. Keep proportions locked if you want to resize the shape without stretching it. Baking can change the final shape; the software does not predict how a particular dough will spread.

3. Inspect the cutting edge and details

Review the wall, cutting edge and grip in the 3D preview. Narrow corners, small openings and delicate impressions deserve special attention. Run the design checks, then inspect the exported model in a slicer. The checks help you find problems; they do not certify a print or a food-contact tool.

4. Arrange an appropriate print

Export STL or 3MF and save an editable project backup. If using STL, confirm millimetres when importing it into a slicer. Tell your print provider that the intended use involves food and ask them to confirm appropriate materials, production and cleaning. Cutter Bench does not certify food safety or supply physical tools.

Review one test tool before ordering a set. Use the first-print checklist and editable printing request to keep track of dimensions and intended use.
